KATHMANDU, Nepal (GlobalpostInfo) – The office of President Ramchandra Poudel has issued a statement saying former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been appointed the country’s first woman Prime Minister. Nepal had come to a week-long agitation led by Gen-Z of Nepal for a new chapter of politics and history. Acting on the recommendation of the newly-appointed Prime Minister Karki, President Ramchandra Paudel has moved to dissolve the House of Representatives.
The protests had erupted after the government of Nepal banned more than 20 social media applications. Frustrated with the restriction, which they considered an attack on freedom of speech, the act soon made its way to the streets, where thousands of young people were marshalled through Discord and livestreams.
The protests soon turned to violence. Clashes have broken out between demonstrators and police. As per the latest update, the number of people who have been killed reached 51. Hundreds more were injured. Parliament House, the Supreme Court, politicians’ houses, and even business buildings were burned to ashes. The government later rescinded the social media ban and announced compensation, followed by an investigation into the violence.
A new election is called for March 2026. Karki, who has cultivated a strong reputation as an honest, anti-corruption leader, has promised to restore the peace and conduct free and fair elections in Nepal. However, young demonstrators in the street are continuing to demand more drastic change. “Our fight is not about social media,” one demonstrator told GlobalpostInfo. “Our demand is to end the culture of corruption in the country and to give voice to Nepali youths.”
