Venerable Dr. Kumar Gurung and Dr. Narad Pokhrel, two prominent figures in the Bhutanese American community, have been honored with the 2026 Lifetime Legacy & Leadership Award for their contributions to education, entrepreneurship, humanitarian service, community leadership, literature and cultural advancement.
The awards, accompanied by Certificates of Honor, were presented during the Bhutanese Joint Annual Conference 2026 in Omaha, Nebraska. The recognition was jointly conferred by the Global Bhutanese Organization (GBO), Global Bhutanese Literary Organization (GBLO), Bhutanese American Music Association (BAMA), Global Foundation (GF), and Bhutanese Samaj Nebraska (BSN).
The certificates carried the signatures of DB. Rai, president of GBO; Patalo Antare, president of GBLO; Biswaz Gurung, president of BAMA; Praja Dhital, president of Global Foundation; and Buddhi M. Monger, president of Bhutanese Samaj Nebraska. The formal session of the conference was emceed by literary figure Diyalo Susan Majhi. Program coordinator and community advocate Bhim Gurung delivered the welcome and opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of unity within the Bhutanese community, preservation of cultural identity, leadership development among younger generations and institutional collaboration. Chandrakala Rai, vice president of Bhutanese Samaj Nebraska, delivered a welcome address, while D.B. Tamang performed a welcome song before the program proceeded to its other sessions.
Venerable Dr. Kumar Gurung was honored in recognition of his lifetime contributions as an entrepreneur, investor, spiritual practitioner and advocate for community welfare. According to the Certificate of Honor, Dr. Gurung overcame the challenges of a refugee background and earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Business Administration. The award citation also recognized him as a leader associated with Gurung Buddhism at the global level.
The organizers noted that his work in education, culture, humanitarian service and multi-sector innovation has inspired communities across national borders. The recognition highlighted his journey from a refugee background to professional achievement, spiritual leadership and sustained community service. Dr. Gurung’s award represents the community’s appreciation for individuals who have turned personal struggle into service, leadership and broader social responsibility. His life journey was presented as an example of resilience, achievement and commitment to the community.
Dr. Narad Pokhrel was recognized for his distinguished leadership in human services, strategic operations and entrepreneurial innovation. The award citation described Dr. Pokhrel as a multifaceted professional who rose from a refugee background to become a businessman, researcher, poet, lyricist, writer and social worker. As a Bhutanese American Ph.D. graduate and executive leader, the citation recognized his commitment to civic contribution, community empowerment and professional excellence. The award further noted that Dr. Pokhrel’s work reflects a legacy of resilience and advancement. His contributions extend beyond business and leadership to research, creative writing, social service and community development.
Dr. Pokhrel, who also attended the conference as chief guest, spoke about the long-term direction of the Bhutanese community. He stressed the need to protect the cultural identity of younger generations while building a stronger collective economic foundation. He said the community should look beyond individual prosperity and consider shared investment, institutional business ventures and long-term structures that can support the economic security of future generations. He also called for a community-centered approach to retirement security, leadership development and sustainable support for Bhutanese refugees and families still connected to Nepal.
The recognition ceremony formed part of a broader conference that brought together community leaders, writers, artists, entrepreneurs and social advocates. Alongside the awards, the event featured literary readings, musical performances, cultural presentations and institutional reports. Writers and literary figures Shekhar Kaku, Gobin Adhikari, Sargam Thapaliya, Tara Phuyal and Diyalo Susan Majhi presented poems, literary works and other creative pieces. Their presentations reflected on displacement, refugee life, resettlement, language, cultural identity and the experiences of younger generations.
The music and cultural sessions included songs and dances by a range of artists. A song release and video premiere by B.B. Poudel were also featured. Performances included those by Hari Gajmer, Sulav Bhattarai, D.B. Tamang, Kamal Bhai, Manoj Dhakal, Muna Lakhendri, Krisha Gurung, Kamal Rai, K.C. Tamang, Anand Rai and Shiva Mapchan, among others. Dance performances by members of Magar, Tamang and other community groups highlighted the ethnic and cultural diversity represented within the Bhutanese diaspora. Organizing and participating institutions also presented reports and outlined their priorities for the future. The Global Bhutanese Organization said it remains focused on connecting Bhutanese communities resettled around the world and supporting education, health, nutrition and humanitarian needs among refugee communities in Nepal.
The Global Bhutanese Literary Organization shared information about its initiatives to preserve Nepali language, literature and cultural identity. It also encouraged parents to enroll their children in the online Nepali education program, known as GEP, which has been operating for the past seven years. The Global Foundation emphasized collaboration in health, education and social services. Meanwhile, the Bhutanese American Music Association highlighted its goal of connecting younger generations with their cultural heritage through music and the arts.
Bhim Gurung, the conference coordinator and community advocate, said the literary, musical, cultural and institutional presentations made the conference a multidimensional platform for community dialogue. He said the discussions reflected a shared commitment to preserving Bhutanese diaspora identity while strengthening education, health care, humanitarian service, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment for future generations.
