On March 14, Saturday afternoon two Bhutanese American youths died and two more were injured when a train hit a car in Buechel, Kentucky. According to the report, the train slammed into the passenger side of the vehicle, killing both passengers riding on that side. The Wave report writes the driver and another passenger, who was sitting behind the driver, are in critical condition at University of Louisville Hospital.
According to the source, all four were JCPS students of Bhutanese Nepali origin. As local news Wave states that the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as Suk Man Rai, 19, and Chita Chuwan, 16. As reported, both died at the spot of blunt force injuries suffered in the crash.
According to the Wave, the collision occurred at a railroad crossing near the intersection of Bardstown Road and Buechel Bank Road, according to dispatchers. Police said the car ran a signal and crossed into the path of the train, which was traveling at track speed. The Wave3 reports that it was devastating accident. The eye witnesses said the car was “pulverized,” estimating that it was pushed a mile down the tracks. They called the wreck traumatizing.
The Bhutanese American Sports Council (BASC) reported to the news that the demise students were the future of Bhutanese American sports; they were good soccer players and ambitious youths. Bhutanese Referee and coach, Jitu Basnet from Tennessee said, “They had participated some tournaments and have left great impressions of sportsmanship. We will miss them in our upcoming 5th Annual Bhutanese Inter-States Soccer Tournament which is going to held in Nashville, TN in June 19-21, 2015.”
The BASC board expressed their heartfelt condolence to the victims’ bereaved families and friends, and prays for departed souls to rest in peace in heaven. Also, requested all to pray that other two injured Bhutanese American students get recovered well and soon.
To console the mourning families the organizers of the 5th Annual Bhutanese Interstate soccer Tournament, Tennessee has appealed all to gather at the victims’ residence on 28th March 2015, at 12 pm. According to Certified Referee/Coach and 5th Annual Bhutanese Interstates Soccer Tournament’s host committee representative, Jitu Basnet, they have decided to collect some amounts to give to the concerned families. There is open appeal for all the well-wishers and friends from and around the state of Kentucky to get together on March 28, 2015 for mourning ceremony where they can also share their views about the upcoming soccer tournament of Nashville, Tennessee.
