Sharma Oli resigned Tuesday following days of violent youth-led demonstrations that erupted after a sweeping social media ban and spiraled into the country&#8217;s deadliest protest movement in decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was 19 fatalities in initial reports, but subsequent updates from ongoing monitoring suggest the toll has climbed to at least 22. Injuries are estimated at more than 300, with hospitals in Kathmandu overwhelmed by casualties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The protests began after the government blocked 26 <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">social media sites, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">including<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> WhatsApp, after they did not comply with new registration requirements. The decision was widely viewed as censorship, sparking demonstrations that quickly expanded into a broader anti-corruption uprising. Protesters carried national flags and placards with slogans such as <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Shut down corruption, not social media.&#8221;<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-5057 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/globalpostinfo.us\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/regine-1-247x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalpostinfo.us\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/regine-1-247x300.png 247w, https:\/\/globalpostinfo.us\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/regine-1-345x420.png 345w, https:\/\/globalpostinfo.us\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/regine-1.png 490w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Demonstrators stormed the streets of Kathmandu and other major cities, setting fires at parts of Parliament and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">residences<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of senior leaders. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Despite the government lifting the ban on social media, protesters demanded mass resignations and systemic political reform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Following the lethal crackdown, leading human rights <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">groups like<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> issued<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> condemnations and urged that independent investigations be launched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The protest began as a defense of free expression<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, but it<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has exposed deeper frustrations over corruption, nepotism, and leaders unwilling to listen to their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Nepali Army issued a statement on Tuesday, reaffirming its role in protecting national unity and security.
